Nowadays we use more electrical gadgets and appliances than ever before. Most houses lived in today do not have electrical wiring designed for life in the 21st century. If you have to permanently use socket adaptors or extension leads, your house's wiring is not up to the job and some circuits might have been overloaded. Have you ever had your house electrics tested? Rooms with only one or two sockets is a sign that would indicate a house's wiring is over thirty years old and needs to be thoroughly tested. This is probably a good time to start thinking long term and planning for a rewire. Houses often appear to have deceivingly newer electrics because all the switches, sockets and lights have been changed. However, a closer examination can often reveal that the actual age of the wiring is forty or more years old. Professional testing is the only way to tell for sure what state the wiring is in and if it needs rewiring. If your house is over forty years old, the chances are that over the years different owners have altered or extended various wiring circuits just by trying to adapt your house to modern living. Regardless of whether any electrical work was done by professional electrician or by D.I.Y. owners, it will almost certainly not have been done to modern standards. If there are no earth connections in light switch back boxes or sticky greenish black goo starting to appear on the ends of pvc cables it means your wiring is almost certainly over forty years old and in need of replacing. |
